Shanghai Business School (SBS), formerly known as East China Branch of Tax Administration School of the Central Government (founded in 1950), is a public application-oriented undergraduate institution of higher education with a distinctive focus on business studies. Currently the school has four campuses (Fengpu Campus, West Zhongshan Road Campus, Caobao Road Campus, and Guoquan Road Campus) and one school point at Fuzhou Road, and boasts more than 8,000 full-time students and a total of 783 teaching and administrative staff members. It has established 13 secondary level faculties, and 31 undergraduate specialties. Currently, it offers two Master's degree programs, i.e., tourism management and international business.

The school has always adhered to a business-rooted and application-centered" education philosophy and upheld the school motto of "virtuous, erudite and socially responsible", striving to develop "applied, innovative, and internationalization-oriented" school-running features and cultivate high-quality application-oriented business talents with professional attainment, practical ability, innovative spirit, international view, and a strong sense of social responsibility. It is devoted to building a high-level application-oriented business school with distinctive characteristics. At present, it has created a comprehensive, multi-level educational framework, ranging from undergraduate to graduate education, and from full-time education to adult education and international student education.

Focusing on strengthening the construction of characteristic business specialties (specialty clusters), the school has been included in the "Fourth Batch of Characteristic Specialty Construction Points at Institutions of Higher Learning" under the Ministry of Education, the first batch of "Undergraduate Teaching Project" comprehensive reform experimental specialties at local institutions of higher learning under the Ministry of Education, and the "First-Class Undergraduate Specialty Construction Leading Program of Shanghai Municipality at Institutions of Higher Learning". To be specific, business administration, E-Business, hospitality management, international economics and trade, and logistics management are national-level first-class undergraduate specialties. Eight specialties, including finance and computer science and technology, are Shanghai municipal-level first-class undergraduate specialties. Taxation and eight other specialties are Shanghai municipal-level application-oriented undergraduate experimental specialties. Business administration, hospitality management, E-Business, and marketing have passed ACBSP international certification.Food quality and safety has passed IFT professional certification. The school has carried out all-round strategic cooperation with Shanghai University of Finance and Economics to accelerate the construction of special discipline zones, focusing on creating a characteristic business discipline system based on applied economics and business administration and characterized by the coordinated development of multiple disciplines. Applied economics is a plateau discipline (class-II) at Shanghai municipal level, while business administration has been included in the Shanghai Higher Education Institutions First-Class Discipline (Class B) Construction Program.

The school attaches great importance to the coordinated high-quality development of industry, education, and research. It has carried out nine national and municipal-level "four-new" projects, and achieved the full coverage of new engineering, new agriculture, and new arts specialty projects as advocated by the Ministry of Education. Besides two key industrial colleges at Shanghai municipal level, the school has also built intensified training bases in China for the WorldSkills Competition and a Shanghai innovation and entrepreneurship education practice base. Over the past five years, the school has undertaken more than 94 scientific research projects at or above the provincial or ministerial level subsidized by the National Social Science Foundation of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Science Fund, and so forth, and won more than ten provincial or ministerial-level scientific research awards, including Shanghai Municipality Research Achievements Award for Decision-making Consultation.

Focusing on national and local strategic demands and major industrial demands, the school has deepened all-round strategic cooperation with Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, and launched a series of high-quality commercial (business) application research and consultation services. It has also built multiple municipal-level scientific research bases and platforms, such as Shanghai Institute of Commercial Development, University Think Tank of Shanghai, Shanghai Social Science Innovative Research Base, Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Universities of Shanghai, and University Knowledge Service Platform of Shanghai. The Academy for International Business Officials (AIBO), MOFCOM, established by the Ministry of Commerce at SBS, has offered training to a cumulative total of 4,500 business officials from 119 countries (regions) worldwide.

Clinging to the principle of open education, the school never ceases to enhance its international reputation and influence. The establishment of the "College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management", a Sino-foreign cooperative education institution jointly applied by Shanghai Business School (SBS) and EHL Education Group (EHL), was officially approved by the Ministry of Education in May 2021. Currently, there are 160 undergraduate students majoring in hospitality management and E-Business. SBS has engaged in cooperation and exchanges with 103 institutions of higher learning and research institutions in the US, the UK, Australia, and many other countries and regions, initiated the founding of "The Belt and Road Initiative" International Business Education Alliance, led the formation of the International Alliance of High-end Business Think Tanks, and established its Overseas Education Base in Central and Eastern Europe.

The school lays emphasis on the inheritance of traditional commercial culture. It has built Chinese Commercial Culture Exhibition Hall and Shanghai-style Commercial Culture Research Institute, produced a range of business culture-themed feature films, such as Centennial History of Commerce in Shanghai, Centennial History of Retails, and Centennial History of Trade, and undertaken the interview and selection activities of the Chinese Poetry Competition (Seasons II and III) in Shanghai. The school has also received many honors, including the "Silver Prize of the 2nd Chinese Youth Volunteer Service Project Competition", the "Excellent Organization Award of 2019 Chinese Classics Recitation, Writing, and Speech Contest of the Ministry of Education", the "2nd Civilized Campus in Shanghai", and the "Safe and Civilized Campus in Shanghai".

Standing at a new historical starting point, the school will continue adhere to its original aspiration and mission of cultivating talents for the country, and implement its fundamental task of fostering character and civic virtue. Guided by the established tasks in the "14th Five-year Plan", the school will stress the cultivation of high-quality application-oriented talents in the principles of "basing on high-quality development and sticking to characteristic school running, and forge ahead bravely on the new journey of building a high-level application-oriented business school with distinctive characteristics.
