On the morning of June 8th, SBS Party Secretary Li Xin, Vice Party Secretary and Secretary of Discipline Committee Lou Wengao, and Director of SBS Party Branch Department of Organization Hou Liyu visited the exhibition hall for “Into the Realm” - Exhibition of Outstanding Graduate Design of College of Art Design and gave their guidance. Zhu Yongli, Secretary of College of Art Design Party Branch, Cheng Yanping, Director of Department of Vision Expression and Design accompanied the visit and reported to Secretary Li on the exhibition and the education reform of the college.

The exhibition is themed on “Into the realm”, takes the form of “one show and four exhibitions”, and showcases the outstanding graduate design from 160 students in department of visual expression and design, environmental design, garment and costume design, and gardening design. Holding the philosophy of “Focusing on business, targeting on application”, the graduate design exhibition chooses its theme with focus on connection with market, closely combines it with the hot trend in consumer market, and shows the objective of the College in cultivating application-based art design talents. Many of the graduate designs are finished through cooperation between students and cultural creation companies or famous enterprises. Secretary Li Xin expressed his recognition on the close combination of design projects and the market projects. At the booth of visual expression design, when having learned that the department of visual expressional and design has made planning and promotion around a company product “buyihuami”, and the outstanding design plans have acquired intellectual property rights, Secretary Li Xin was very happy and believed that it truly realized the full market-based connection of academics and industry. The graduate design of department of garment and costume design combined with the 2nd “Think Youth” – Exhibition of Shanghai University Students Cultural Innovation Works. Secretary Li expressed his congratulation on the one 1st prize, two 2nd prizes, and one 3rd prize won by SBS students at the exhibition, and praised the spirit of hard working shown by students and faculties. Department of environmental design and department of gardening also themed their design on actual projects for dining space, hotels, offices, cultural spaces, and scenic design of the market, which enables the student designs are more realistic and the companies obtain satisfying product design, thus realize the objective of win-win.
The delegation visited all exhibit areas with great interest, and, combining with the works in exhibit, made new requirements on the future exhibitions and the education reform work of application-based undergraduate education. Secretary Li wishes that College of Art Design can grasp the opportunities of constructing a pilot application-based undergraduate program of Shanghai, further improve the education and academic reform as well as the talent cultivation works of the college, comprehensively improve the quality of academics and the school, bear the responsibility for improving the art and humanistic quality of the school, focus on the cultivation of outstanding business talents, and contribute to the cultivation of humanistic quality and accumulation of artistic quality of all students in SBS. She also welcomes students of all majors to come and visit the exhibition.
Background:
After careful preparation, on the afternoon of June 6th, the exhibition of College of Art Design class 2017’s graduate works was held in Administration Building and classroom 112 of Xuhui campus. The exhibition is themed on “Into the Realm” and takes the form of “one show and four exhibitions”. Outstanding graduate designs from 211 students from department of visual expression and design, department of environmental design, department of garment and costume design, and department of gardening design showcased their art works with unique characters and the spirit of going-forward in the creation process. Zhao Yongquan and Chu Yanjie, Vice Dean of College of Art Design, Zhang Yonghong, Director of SBS Admission Office, head and faculties of departments under College of Art Design, Liu Weiya, head of Shanghai Liu Weiya Master’s Studio, Ding Yifan, founder of Shanghai Forever Corporate Image Planning Co. Ltd., Wang Yueju, CEO of Shanghai Tianjuyuan Co. Ltd., and He Fenni, Manager of Quanzhu Construction Co. Ltd, attended the opening ceremony. Professor Jiang Yan from Wenzhou University College of Art and Design Department of Garment Engineering also led a 25-student delegation for on-site communication.

Vice Dean Chu Yanjie of College of Art Design delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. She reviewed the preparation process of the graduate designs and fully summarized the two highlight points of the exhibition. First is the connection with market through “one show and four exhibitions” and the ideas of the works. Dean Chu explained the in-depth meaning of “Into the Realm” as the theme of the graduate work exhibition. The show closely follows the trend of international fashion. Themed on the hot topic “time”, it wishes the designers to think about the relationship between time and nature, and that between time and human and thus bring us different inspirations of activeness, peace, and future by thinking of the different status of objects using “Ksana”, a time-measuring unit with great features of oriental philosophy. It is a source of inspiration for the innovation in academics. The show, featured by 22 series of high professional level graduate design from students of department of garments and costumes, is an important part of the opening ceremony. The four exhibition shows the work of four departments under College of Art Design. Graduate design of department of visual expression and design features design of poster and brand promotion; that of department of environmental design is mainly about indoor design and designs for small architectures; that of department of garments and costume design features the design and making of modern costumes; and the graduate design of department of gardening focuses on the design of scenic gardens. The four departments are showing their works in the same stage with different features. The second spotlight of the exhibition is that the ideas in the works are closely connected with the market. Many of the graduate design works are design projects in cooperation with cultural innovation companies or famous companies. The College, holding the philosophy of centering on business, chose the topics for design based on actual projects, which shows the idea of application-based university. The students, through actual experience with real projects, turns their design achievements into real values, and helps the companies to obtain satisfactory product design, which realize a win-win for both parties.

Professor Ma Xinyu gave an enthusiastic speech as the guidance teacher of graduate design. He reviewed the process of guiding students through the graduate design process, summarized the adjustment of education philosophy of College of Art Design, introduced his own feeling about the cultivation of application-based talents, and wished that students can take advantage of the SBS platform and enter the society with bravery and confidence, plan the future well and create values for the society.
Wang Zerong, the First Prize winner of the 2nd “Think Youth” Shanghai University Students Cultural Innovation Works hosted by Shanghai Education Commission, spoke about her feeling at the opening ceremony as a student representative, reviewed her progress in SBS, and greatly appreciated the College and the teachers for their advanced education philosophy and the spirit of dedication, which lays a solid foundation for the future splendid life of all graduates.

Then, the graduate design show of the 22 series of work designed by Department of Garment and Costume Design Class 2017 has put the opening ceremony into the climax. The carefully designed pieces fit perfectly with the elegant models and received applause from the audience. Some of the graduate design also participated in the 2nd “Think Youth” Shanghai University Students Cultural Innovation Works hosted by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and won one 1st prize, two 2nd prize, and one 3rd prize, which shows the high professional level of the design.

The exhibition includes works from 211 graduate students of department of visual expression and design, environmental design, garment and costume design, and gardening. Each work is created with accumulation, trial, and works. They bear the idea and hopes of the students, and signify the hardworking, relentless strive, and persistent pursuit of the faculties and students of the College of Art Design. They use lines and colors, materials and lights, and concrete and abstract languages to interpret their understanding and feeling about beauty. Many works have selected by companies and will be put into the market after optimization. Such as the “buyihuami” series packaging design by department of visual expression and design is exactly a planning and packaging for company products. Its intellectual property has been bought by relevant company, which greatly ignites the enthusiasm and confidence of students.

The graduate show is a comprehensive report on the achievements of the students in four years of study, also an overall check on the teaching works of College of Art Design, and even a concentrated representation of the academics capability of the college. From the exhibition, we can see that after four years of study, students has got good command of the professional knowledge and skills. They will be able to solve the problems in their future works with their knowledge, and serve the society with their capabilities. The graduate show, as a new start for the art life of students, will follow the students as they enter the society and a more broad stage with confidence. Through the concentrated exhibition of graduate designs, College of Art Design on one hand wishes to invite cultural, art, and education institutions to come and select talents and offer more career opportunities to the graduates, and on the other hand feedback to the society by holding exhibitions, and lets Shanghai citizens to know about the pursuit of students more intuitively.
